About CircuLite

CircuLite, Inc. operated as a medical device company focused on developing solutions for chronic heart failure. Founded in 2004, the firm's core objective was to provide a less invasive treatment option for patients in the earlier stages of heart failure who were symptomatic but not yet dependent on inotropes.

The company's flagship product was the SYNERGY Circulatory Support System, a miniature implantable blood pump described as being the size of a AA battery. This device was designed to supplement the heart's natural function rather than replace it, aiming to improve blood flow and enhance the patient's quality of life. A key feature of the SYNERGY system was its minimally invasive implantation procedure, which did not require open-heart surgery. The pump was placed in a subcutaneous pocket, similar to a pacemaker, and connected to the left atrium and subclavian artery. This approach was intended to make long-term circulatory support available to a broader patient population, including those who might not be candidates for more invasive full-support Ventricular Assist Devices (VADs).

CircuLite's business model revolved around the development and sale of this specialized medical device to hospitals and cardiac treatment centers. The target market consisted of ambulatory, chronic heart failure patients, a demographic considered to be substantially larger than the end-stage heart failure population typically treated with full-support VADs. The company achieved a significant milestone by receiving CE Mark approval in Europe in September 2012, allowing for its commercial use within the European Union. It also received conditional Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) approval from the U.S. FDA in March 2013 to begin a feasibility trial in the United States.

In December 2013, CircuLite was acquired by HeartWare International Inc., a major player in the VAD market. The deal was structured with an upfront payment of $30 million in cash and stock, with up to an additional $320 million in contingent payments based on achieving specific regulatory and commercial milestones over a ten-year period. At the time of the acquisition, CircuLite was addressing issues with its device's inflow cannula, which had led to a temporary halt in new implants. The acquisition by HeartWare was seen as a strategic move to enter the partial-assist market for earlier-stage heart failure.
