Cimu
On-demand clothing alterations with at-home service
About Cimu
Cimu provides on-demand clothing alterations, aiming to modernize the tailoring industry. The company serves clients in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and Jersey City. The process begins when a customer texts a photo of themselves wearing the garment, after which Cimu provides a rough estimate and schedules an at-home visit from a professional pinner. Following the pinning session, which typically takes 30 minutes or less, the garments are picked up, altered by expert tailors, and delivered back to the customer's door within seven days. Rush services for same-day or next-day delivery are also available.
The company was founded by Kaci and Zepto, who met during an internship in Hong Kong. Kaci, a seamstress herself, was trying to connect online fashion retailers with local tailors to reduce returns but found it difficult to find reliable tailors in the U.S. due to their limited online presence. Zepto, finding the situation absurd compared to the accessible tailoring in Hong Kong, developed the initial user flow for Cimu. The venture began as a project at Yale University, supported by the Tsai Center for Innovative Thinking. Cimu's business model includes a service fee for connecting customers with skilled sewing professionals, which covers platform maintenance, customer support, and quality control. The service handles a wide range of alterations, from basic hemming to complex silhouette restructuring, for various garments, excluding wedding gowns.
