About Charged
PT Industri Charged Mobilitas, operating as Charged, is an electric motorcycle manufacturer and distributor established in Indonesia in 2022. The company was co-founded by Joel CY Chang, who serves as the Group CEO. Chang's background includes over a decade with a German car manufacturer and roles at other Singaporean e-moto startups, Scorpio Electric and Ion Mobility, reflecting a long-standing engagement with the electric vehicle sector driven by concerns about climate change and pollution. Charged is on a mission to accelerate the mass adoption of sustainable mobility in Southeast Asia, with a goal of deploying 10 million electric motorcycles within 10 years.
The company's business model encompasses direct sales, a rent-to-own model, and a distinctive subscription service, branded as EVaaS (Electric Vehicles as-a-Service). This subscription model, with terms of 3, 6, 9, and 12 months, is designed to lower the barrier to entry for consumers by eliminating concerns about maintenance and battery life. Over 90% of its bikes on the road are distributed through this method, primarily serving B2B clients, logistics companies, corporate fleets, and ride-hailing (ojol) drivers. To support its operations, the company secured initial funding of $4.5 million from DeClout Ventures in September 2022, followed by a strategic investment from Vmoto Soco Group in March 2023, which brought total funding to $7.7 million. Further funding of up to $40 million was secured from Geo Energy Resources in August 2023 to fuel expansion.
Charged operates a 16,000-square-meter, solar-powered manufacturing facility, known as the "Giga-Shed," in Cikupa, Tangerang. This plant serves as a production hub, research and development lab, and experiential center, with an annual production capacity of 230,000 units. The company's product line is developed in partnership with Vmoto Soco and utilizes batteries from CATL, a major global battery manufacturer. Its main models are the Anoa (heavy-duty), Rimau (sporty), and Maleo (agile commuter), each derived from existing Vmoto Soco platforms. Models like the Maleo can reach speeds of 70 km/h with a range of up to 125 km, featuring digital displays and LED lighting. The company has also introduced newer models like the Baycat, an affordable city motorcycle with fast-charging capabilities.
