Cebix
Developing treatments for diabetic complications that affect the function of nerves, kidneys and eyes
About Cebix
Cebix Inc. was a clinical-stage biotechnology company established in 2008, with operations based in La Jolla, California. The company's scientific foundation was built upon the research of its co-founder, Swedish academic John Wahren. In the 1990s, Wahren's work identified that C-peptide, a byproduct of the body's natural insulin production, possessed therapeutic properties for treating diabetic complications like nerve, kidney, and eye function deterioration. This discovery formed the core of Cebix's mission.
The company focused on developing a therapy for the 60% to 70% of diabetic patients who suffer from peripheral neuropathy, a market with no approved disease-modifying treatments. Cebix's lead drug candidate was Ersatta, a proprietary, long-acting analog of the C-peptide hormone. This once-weekly, self-injected therapy was designed to replace the C-peptide that is deficient in individuals with Type 1 diabetes, with the goal of reversing the loss of nerve function. The business model was centered on advancing Ersatta through clinical trials to prove its efficacy and eventually secure a partnership or acquisition by a larger pharmaceutical entity.
Cebix successfully attracted significant venture capital, raising a total of $59 million over five funding rounds. Key investors included prominent life science venture firms such as InterWest Partners, Sofinnova Investments, and Thomas, McNerney & Partners. The company operated with a lean, virtual team, managed by CEO Joel Martin, a seasoned executive with prior experience at firms like Forward Ventures and Quantum Dot Corporation. After a promising Phase I/II study, Cebix initiated a large-scale Phase IIb clinical trial in 2012 to definitively test Ersatta's effectiveness against a placebo. However, in December 2014, the trial concluded that the results for Ersatta were indistinguishable from the placebo. Following this definitive outcome, the management determined there was no viable path forward for development and promptly wound down all operations within 30 days in early 2015.
