About Animas Corporation
Animas Corporation, founded in 1996 and headquartered in West Chester, Pennsylvania, specialized in the development and manufacturing of insulin pumps for patients with diabetes. The company went public in May 2004, trading under the ticker symbol PUMP. In December 2005, Johnson & Johnson announced its intention to acquire Animas for approximately $518 million, a deal that was finalized in February 2006. Following the acquisition, Animas operated as a stand-alone entity within Johnson & Johnson's diabetes care division, reporting through LifeScan, Inc.

Animas focused on providing insulin delivery systems to the diabetes care market. Its business model revolved around the design, production, and sale of computerized insulin pumps and related accessories to individuals requiring insulin therapy. The company's products included the Animas Vibe and OneTouch Ping insulin pumps. The Animas Vibe was a notable product that integrated with Dexcom's Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) technology, allowing users to view real-time glucose data and trends directly on the pump's color screen. This system was designed to be waterproof and offered precise, fine-tuned insulin dosing, which was particularly beneficial for pediatric patients. The OneTouch Ping system featured a wireless connection to a paired glucose meter remote. Another offering was the Animas 2020 pump, though this model later faced a software issue that would render it inoperable after December 31, 2015.
Despite its product offerings, Animas faced significant challenges due to rapidly changing market dynamics and intense competitive pressures. In October 2017, Johnson & Johnson announced the closure of Animas Corporation and its exit from the insulin pump business. The company discontinued the manufacturing and sale of its Animas Vibe and OneTouch Ping pumps in the U.S. and Canada and made arrangements with Medtronic to facilitate a transition for its approximately 90,000 patients. The decision was part of a broader strategic review by Johnson & Johnson of its diabetes care companies. At the time of its closure, Animas employed approximately 410 people globally.
