CARE Hospitals Group, established in 1997 by cardiologist Dr. Bhupathiraju Somaraju and his associates, has evolved from a single specialty cardiac hospital into a major multi-specialty healthcare provider in India. The journey began with a 100-bed Heart Institute in Hyderabad, founded by a team of 20 cardiologists. Dr. Somaraju, a recipient of the Padma Shri award, provided the foundational vision for the group, leveraging his extensive experience as the former Head of Cardiology and Dean at Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences. His work in making cardiac care more affordable, including the development of a low-cost coronary stent in collaboration with A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, underscores the institution's core philosophy.

The group operates as a multi-specialty hospital chain, providing comprehensive medical services across more than 30 clinical specialties. Key areas of excellence include Cardiac Sciences, Neurosciences, Renal Sciences, Gastroenterology, and Integrated Organ Transplants. The business model focuses on delivering cost-effective medical care to patients, primarily in Tier-2 cities across India, addressing a significant market need for quality healthcare in under-penetrated regions. Revenue is generated through the provision of a wide array of healthcare services, from consultations and diagnostics to complex surgeries like heart and liver transplants.

CARE Hospitals has undergone significant expansion through both organic growth and strategic acquisitions. A major milestone in its corporate journey was the acquisition of a majority stake by the private equity firm Blackstone in 2023, marking Blackstone's first major investment in India's healthcare services sector. Following this, CARE Hospitals acquired a majority stake in KIMSHEALTH, creating one of India's largest hospital platforms with 23 facilities across 11 cities and over 4,000 beds. This strategic consolidation aims to create a market-leading platform by combining clinical expertise and expanding its geographical footprint. The group's facilities are often NABH-accredited, signifying a commitment to high standards of quality and patient safety.
