FunPep is a clinical-stage biotechnology company that emerged from Osaka University in October 2013, focusing on the practical application of peptide-based research. The company was founded to commercialize the research of Professors Ryuichi Morishita and Hironori Nakagami from Osaka University's Graduate School of Medicine, who established the core technologies for designing and optimizing functional peptides. FunPep leverages this academic foundation to develop products spanning pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and functional cosmetics. The company went public, listing on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Mothers market in December 2020.

The company's operations are centered on two proprietary platform technologies: SPIRIT (Smart PeptIde Research Integrated Technology) for creating functional peptides, and STEP UP (Search Technology of EPitope for Unique Peptide vaccine) for generating antibody-inducing peptides. Its primary business model involves incubating promising technology seeds from university research and advancing them toward commercialization through partnerships with pharmaceutical companies, generating revenue from license fees and royalties. FunPep’s core innovation lies in its antibody-inducing peptides, which are designed to stimulate the patient's own immune system to produce therapeutic antibodies against disease-related proteins. This approach aims to provide a more affordable and long-acting alternative to expensive antibody drugs, potentially reducing the frequency of administration to once every few months.

FunPep's development pipeline targets unmet medical needs. A key candidate is SR-0379, a functional peptide for treating skin ulcers, which has been licensed to Shionogi & Co., Ltd. and has undergone Phase III clinical trials. Another significant asset is FPP003, an antibody-inducing peptide for psoriasis, which has completed Phase I/IIa clinical trials in Australia and is under an option agreement with Sumitomo Pharma. The company is also developing treatments for other conditions, including an allergy vaccine candidate (FPP004X) for pollinosis in collaboration with Shionogi, and is exploring AI-driven drug discovery for constrained peptides.
