About BlueCity

BlueCity Holdings Limited is a global online platform centered on the LGBTQ community. The company's origins trace back to 2000, when founder Ma Baoli, then a closeted police officer, created Danlan.org, one of China's first online forums for gay men. This was born from Ma's own feelings of isolation and the difficulty of finding community at a time when homosexuality was still classified as a mental illness in China. The forum's popularity grew, and after his identity was revealed, Ma left his law enforcement career in 2011 to establish BlueCity, launching the flagship mobile app, Blued, in 2012.

The company's primary asset, the Blued app, functions as a social networking platform for the LGBTQ community, particularly gay men. It offers location-based services to connect users, alongside features like verified profiles, group chats, photo and video sharing, and private albums. A significant component of the platform is its live streaming service, which allows users to broadcast content, interact with followers in real-time, and receive virtual gifts, creating a revenue stream for both the creators and the company. BlueCity generates revenue through a freemium model, where the core app is free but users can subscribe for premium features, alongside income from live streaming, advertising, and other services.

Beyond social networking, BlueCity has a strong focus on health and wellness. In 2019, it launched He Health, a platform dedicated to men's health that has since obtained an Internet hospital license in China. This service provides health consultations on topics like HIV prevention and testing, connecting users with medical professionals and information, which has also been a key part of its corporate social responsibility efforts. Over the years, BlueCity expanded its portfolio by acquiring other platforms, including LESDO, a social app for lesbian women, and Finka, another social app for gay and bisexual men, to diversify its audience. After a period as a publicly traded company on Nasdaq starting in July 2020, BlueCity completed a merger in August 2022 and became a private, wholly-owned subsidiary, ceasing to be publicly traded.
