Blispay
Next generation of point-of-sale financing
About Blispay
Blispay, founded in 2014 by Greg Lisiewski, operated in the financial technology sector, providing point-of-sale financing solutions for small and midsize retailers. The founder, Lisiewski, brought extensive experience from the consumer credit industry, having been the Head of Global Credit Products at PayPal and an early employee at Bill Me Later, which was acquired by PayPal. This background shaped Blispay’s mission to offer financing options to merchants who lacked the scale to provide in-house credit programs, akin to those at large big-box stores.
The company's core product allowed consumers to apply for and receive instant credit for purchases over $199, with a promotional offer of no interest if paid in full within six months. Upon approval, customers were issued a Blispay Visa card, which could be used for the initial purchase and subsequent transactions at any merchant accepting Visa. This card also featured a 2% cashback reward on all purchases. The business model was designed to be seamless for merchants, requiring no technical integration to offer the financing option at the point of sale. Blispay's revenue was generated from the interest applied to balances not paid in full after the six-month promotional period.
The Baltimore-based startup showed early promise, raising over $29 million in funding from investors including FirstMark Capital, NEA, and Camden Partners. By 2017, the company had expanded its network to over 500 merchants and processed transactions across all 50 states. However, in November 2018, Blispay abruptly suspended its lending operations, citing that demand had outpaced its capacity. This suspension ultimately led to the acquisition of select technology assets and the onboarding of its team by Alliance Data Systems (now Bread Financial Holdings, Inc.) in the first quarter of 2019 for approximately $7.7 million. The acquisition aimed to bolster Alliance Data's private label and co-brand card services and advance its payment technology capabilities.
