In 1997, Bryant Riley, along with Tom Kelleher, founded B. Riley & Co. as a small firm focused on providing research on small-cap companies. The initial idea was to serve a niche market of institutional investors that was often overlooked by larger Wall Street firms. This foundation in specialized research set the stage for a journey of calculated expansion and diversification. A pivotal moment arrived in 2014 when B. Riley & Co. merged with Great American Group, a firm specializing in appraisals and liquidations. This merger created the publicly traded entity B. Riley Financial and marked a significant strategic shift. The company was no longer just a research boutique; it was now a diversified financial services platform. This new structure allowed the firm to offer a broader range of services, from investment banking to asset disposition. Following the merger, the company went on an acquisition spree, further broadening its capabilities. In 2017, it acquired FBR & Co. for $160 million and Wunderlich Securities for $67 million, significantly scaling its investment banking and wealth management divisions. This strategy of growth-by-acquisition continued, with the firm absorbing companies in financial consulting, brand management, and communications. In July 2015, the company uplisted to the Nasdaq, enhancing its visibility and access to capital markets.
