About AstraZeneca
The story of AstraZeneca begins not as one, but as two separate entities across the North Sea. In Sweden, Astra AB was founded in 1913 by a group of over 400 doctors and apothecaries. Their aim was to establish domestic production of pharmaceuticals, a market dominated at the time by German and Swiss companies. One of its early successes was the local anesthetic Xylocaine. Meanwhile, in the United Kingdom, Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI), a major chemical company, decided to spin off its pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals divisions in 1993. This demerger created Zeneca Group PLC. The name 'Zeneca' was a deliberate invention, designed to be memorable and free of any unintended meanings in other languages. A pivotal moment arrived in 1999 when Astra AB and Zeneca Group merged, creating the modern-day AstraZeneca. This move was framed as a merger of equals, combining the strengths of both companies to create a new global leader in the pharmaceutical industry. The nearly $37 billion deal was one of the largest European mergers of its time. The newly formed entity established its corporate headquarters in the UK and its research and development headquarters in Sweden, reflecting its dual heritage.
