About Aseptia
Aseptia was established in 2006 as a food technology enterprise, originating from research conducted at North Carolina State University. The company was co-founded by Josip Simunovic and Michael Drozd. Aseptia centered its operations on a patented microwave-based sterilization technology designed to extend the shelf life of perishable foods to as long as 12 months without refrigeration or preservatives. This process, known as AseptiWave, maintains the food's natural flavors and nutritional value, a significant differentiator from traditional canning or freezing methods.
The company's initial business model involved both producing preservative-free packaged foods and licensing its technology. To manage its manufacturing, Aseptia created a wholly owned subsidiary, Wright Foods, in 2012 and opened a production facility in Troy, North Carolina. This plant co-packed a variety of low-acid products, including soups, purees, sauces, and juices for food service clients and private-label customers. Aseptia demonstrated substantial growth, recognized as the 15th fastest-growing private company in the U.S. by Inc. magazine in 2014. The firm successfully raised $37.2 million over three funding rounds, attracting investors such as SJF Ventures, Lookout Capital, and Prudential.
In 2016, Aseptia executed a strategic pivot by selling its manufacturing operations, including Wright Foods and another subsidiary, Carolina Dairy, to AmeriQual Group Holdings. This move shifted the company's focus from direct manufacturing to a technology licensing model. As part of the sale, Aseptia entered into a long-term licensing agreement with AmeriQual for the continued use of its AseptiWave and AseptiSense technologies. This transaction allowed Aseptia to concentrate on the global expansion and adoption of its proprietary food preservation systems, while AmeriQual took over the production facilities. The company is now considered deadpooled.
