Apertio
Leading provider of open real-time subscriber data platforms for telecommunications operators
About Apertio
Apertio, founded in 2002 by Michael Welbourne and Kevin Wakefield, established itself as a provider of infrastructure software for the telecommunications industry. The company was headquartered in Bristol, United Kingdom, and focused on delivering subscriber data platforms and applications tailored for mobile, fixed, and converged telecom operators. Its core product was a subscriber-centric software solution designed to reduce deployment time and complexity for network operators, laying a foundation for network convergence. This technology allowed telecom providers to access real-time subscriber profiles, enabling the delivery of targeted services and advertising. Apertio's client roster included major industry names like Orange, T-Mobile, O2, and Vodafone.
The company's growth was financed through several funding rounds, including a seed round of $1.94 million in December 2002, a Series A of $8.9 million in August 2004, and a Series B of $30 million in February 2006. Its investors included Add Partners, Deutsche Venture Capital, Eden Ventures, and Motorola Mobility. In October 2007, Apertio acquired Netzwert AG, a German telecommunications software vendor, to enhance its capabilities. The company's trajectory culminated in its acquisition by Nokia Siemens Networks on January 2, 2008, for approximately €140 million (about $206 million). Following the acquisition, Apertio was integrated as a new business line within Nokia Siemens Networks' Converged Core business unit.
Separately, an Israeli-based startup named Apertio Technologies was founded in 2017. This company developed a search engine for open government data, launching its first product in October 2018. It ceased operations in February 2021. Another unrelated firm, a family office also named Apertio, was established in France in December 2022 by Jennifer Lagrange Aurelle and Laura Bentegeat to provide wealth management services.
