About Amplitude Studios
Amplitude Studios, a Paris-based video game developer, was established in January 2011 by former Ubisoft employees Mathieu Girard and Romain de Waubert de Genlis. The founders leveraged their shared experience and complementary skills to enter the PC gaming market, focusing on the 4X strategy genre (explore, expand, exploit, and exterminate). The company's business model centers on the development and sale of premium PC games, initially distributed through platforms like Steam.
A core component of Amplitude's strategy is its "Games2Gether" platform, a proprietary system that facilitates community-driven game design. This platform allows players to provide feedback, suggest features, and vote on design choices, directly influencing the development process and fostering a close relationship with its user base. The studio primarily operates in the strategy game market, targeting fans of deep, turn-based gameplay.
The studio's debut title, *Endless Space*, was released in July 2012 and achieved significant success, selling over one million units and earning a Unity Golden Cube award in 2013. This initial success was followed by other critically acclaimed titles set within the same "Endless" universe, including *Endless Legend* and *Dungeon of the Endless*. In July 2016, seeking broader market reach and greater resources, Amplitude Studios was acquired by Sega Europe. Under Sega's ownership, the studio released sequels like *Endless Space 2* (2017) and expanded its portfolio with the historical 4X game *Humankind* (2021) and the tactical action rogue-lite *Endless Dungeon* (2023).
A significant shift occurred in November 2024 when Amplitude Studios regained its independence through a management buyout by its staff, concluding a period of structural changes at Sega Europe. This move allows the studio to operate with more agility while continuing to develop its established franchises. Co-founder Mathieu Girard had previously departed in 2018 to establish a new studio, Tactical Adventures. As an independent entity once again, Amplitude is now owned by members of its internal team, including original founders, and continues to focus on creating strategy games.
