About Althea Technologies

Althea Technologies operates as a fully integrated contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO), catering to the biopharmaceutical industry. The company was established in 1998 in San Diego, California, by Dr. Magda Marquet and Dr. François Ferré. Both founders brought extensive experience from the biotechnology sector to their new venture. Dr. Marquet holds a Ph.D. in Biochemical Engineering and previously held management roles at Vical, Amylin Pharmaceuticals, and Transgene. Dr. Ferré, who earned his Ph.D. in molecular oncology, trained at the Pasteur Institute and UCSD. Their combined expertise in gene therapy, DNA vaccines, and molecular oncology shaped the foundation of the company.

The firm's business model is centered on providing a comprehensive suite of outsourced services that support pharmaceutical companies from early-stage clinical development through to commercial-scale manufacturing. Revenue is generated by offering services on a contractual basis. Althea specializes in biologics manufacturing, analytical development, and stability testing. A core area of its operations is drug product manufacturing, specifically aseptic fill and finish services for vials and syringes. The company serves a client base that ranges from emerging biotech startups to large pharmaceutical corporations.

Althea's service portfolio is extensive, covering upstream and downstream process development, complex formulation, and product release testing. A key offering is its proprietary Crystalomics® technology, a formulation platform designed for large-molecule products that need to be delivered in high concentrations or as sustained-release formulations. Another significant technology is the Corynex® protein expression system. In 2009, the company expanded its capabilities by opening a 30,000-square-foot commercial-scale cGMP manufacturing facility. A major milestone occurred in April 2013, when Althea Technologies was acquired by Ajinomoto Co., Inc. for approximately $175 million, subsequently becoming Ajinomoto Althea, Inc. In 2018, Ajinomoto Althea merged with OmniChem to form Ajinomoto Bio-Pharma Services, creating a global CDMO with facilities in the US and Europe.
