Allena Pharmaceuticals
Develops and commercializes non-systemic protein therapeutics to treat metabolic and orphan diseases
About Allena Pharmaceuticals
Allena Pharmaceuticals, Inc. operated as a late-stage clinical biopharmaceutical company, which was incorporated in 2011. The company focused on developing and commercializing oral enzyme therapeutics for patients with rare and severe metabolic and kidney disorders. Its primary market was in the United States. The company's business model revolved around the discovery and clinical development of novel biologic treatments. Allena Pharmaceuticals had a virtual operating model, collaborating with contract manufacturing organizations for drug production and contract research organizations (CROs) for clinical trial execution.
The company's lead product candidate was reloxaliase, an oral enzyme therapeutic designed to treat hyperoxaluria, a metabolic condition characterized by high levels of urinary oxalate that often leads to kidney stones and chronic kidney disease. Reloxaliase worked by breaking down oxalate in the gastrointestinal tract to reduce its absorption into the body. Another significant product in their pipeline was ALLN-346, a urate-degrading enzyme for patients suffering from hyperuricemia and gout, particularly those with advanced chronic kidney disease. Allena had pursued a Biologics License Application (BLA) for reloxaliase under the FDA's accelerated approval pathway and had received Fast Track Designation for ALLN-346.
After its founding in 2011, Allena Pharmaceuticals went public with an initial public offering (IPO) on November 2, 2017, raising $80 million. Over its lifetime, the company raised a total of $222 million. However, the company faced significant challenges. On September 2, 2022, Allena Pharmaceuticals filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. This led to the termination of its CEO, Louis Brenner, and CFO, Richard D. Katz. Ultimately, the company's plan of liquidation was approved, and it went out of business effective June 20, 2023.
