Achaogen
Discover and develop broad-spectrum antibiotics to treat multi-drug resistant bacterial infections
About Achaogen
Achaogen was a biopharmaceutical company focused on the development and commercialization of antibacterial agents for multi-drug resistant (MDR) gram-negative infections. The company's lead product was Zemdri (plazomicin), an aminoglycoside antibiotic. Despite securing FDA approval for Zemdri, Achaogen faced significant financial challenges, ultimately leading to its filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in April 2019. The company's assets were subsequently sold off as part of the bankruptcy proceedings. This case is often cited as an example of the market failures in the antibiotic development space, where the high cost of research and development is not met with sufficient market returns, even for clinically important new drugs.
