About Accenture
What if you could see the future of business? That’s the question at the core of Accenture. Today, it’s a global powerhouse helping companies navigate massive shifts in technology, from cloud computing to AI. But its story begins not with a bang, but as a small division within an accounting firm. Accenture’s roots trace back to the 1950s as the business and technology consulting arm of Arthur Andersen. An early project involved helping General Electric install one of the first commercial computers in the U.S., setting the stage for a tech-focused future. While Arthur E. Andersen founded the parent company, it was pioneers like Joseph Glickauf who championed the potential of technology to transform business operations. For decades, this division grew in the shadow of its parent. By 1989, it was formally established as Andersen Consulting. Tensions mounted throughout the 90s as the consulting side became highly profitable, leading to a bitter dispute. The pivotal moment came in 2000, when an arbitrator granted the consulting practice its independence. This split required a new identity. On January 1, 2001, the firm rebranded as “Accenture,” a name submitted by a Danish employee meaning “Accent on the future.” The timing was crucial. Just months later, Accenture launched its IPO on July 19, 2001, raising $1.67 billion. This move solidified its independence shortly before Arthur Andersen collapsed in the wake of the Enron scandal. Led by a series of CEOs from Joe Forehand, who steered the firm through its IPO, to Julie Sweet today, Accenture has relentlessly evolved. The company has made hundreds of acquisitions since 2013, aggressively pushing into digital, cloud, and security services. Today, Accenture is heavily invested in artificial intelligence, positioning itself as a key architect of enterprise reinvention for the world’s largest corporations.
