Binance hit by an estimated $6.3B hack, the largest crypto theft on record; about $3B frozen
Binance, the world's largest crypto exchange, says a security incident on 29 October had an estimated total impact of around $6.3B. Its initial investigation points to a compromised DevOps engineer's laptop that let an attacker reach a service container and submit unauthorised withdrawals; it says it found no evidence of a wallet private-key leak. About $3B has been frozen on-chain, with Tether and Circle freezing USDT and USDC tied to the attacker. Binance suspended withdrawals and says it will cover all losses from its SAFU fund and company funds. Analysts called it the biggest crypto hack ever, well above the ~$1.5B Bybit theft in 2025. Bitcoin fell more than 4% to below $78,000. Elon Musk reacted on X: 'Everyday is Zeroday'.
