From Stockroom to Streetwear Empire: How Ronnie Fieg Built Kith

Key points

Key takeaways from David Senra interview with Kith founder and chief executive officer Ronnie Fieg (September 2026):

From stockroom to buyer. Fieg started aged 13 in the stockroom of his cousin David Z’s New York shoe stores, rising through sales, management and buying. In 2006, aged 23, Asics opened its archive to him and he revived the Gel-Lyte III silhouette — a 252-pair run per colourway — which sold out after a Wall Street Journal mention put a line down the block.

Kith’s founding logic. He opened Kith in 2011 in an 800 sq ft space — the name means “friends”, from “kith and kin” — focused purely on top-tier distribution: the most limited Nike, Yeezy and collaborative product, curated to be the best footwear wall in the world.

No wholesale, no licensing. Kith keeps every touchpoint in-house, roughly half storyteller and half retailer, so the brand controls how product is spoken about, placed and merchandised. Fieg deliberately caps web sales at around half the business and opens stores in cities he travels to — New York, Miami, LA, Tokyo, London and Seoul — with San Francisco and Washington DC next.

Love over money. Fieg says his favourite founders never “work backwards from money”, echoing Steve Jobs’ advice to Nike to “get rid of the crap” and focus on great product. He argues love and substance are transparent to today’s consumers, who are steering back towards physical discovery.

Privately held, no investors. Kith is owned by Fieg and his business partner Sam, with no outside investors — a structure he credits for the freedom to expand patiently and avoid the overexposure he sees in luxury brands under shareholder pressure.

From store to brand. A cut-and-sew pant made in New York’s Garment District was Kith’s entry into apparel in 2012; today the brand produces more than 5,000 styles a year across men’s, women’s, kids’ and accessories, with footwear an anchor but a shrinking share of the business.

Expansion beyond product. Kith has branched into hospitality: Kith Treats (cereal and ice cream), the 16,000 sq ft Kith Ivy padel and wellness club in Tribeca, Ronnie’s fine dining in London and Ronnie’s Pronto in West Hollywood — alongside collaborations such as 47 bespoke BMW XM cars spanning the M1’s 47-year gap.

Fit, craft and the index. Fieg was the brand’s fit model until recently, fitting product four hours a week to fight the industry’s corner-cutting. “Walk the Index”, an app-gated exhibition opening late September 2026, catalogues roughly 1,800 footwear designs from his career.
