Scaling Europe

Turning every smartphone into a skin-cancer detector

Key points

Key takeaways from a Scaling Europe interview with Skin Analytics Founder & CEO Neil Daly (September 2026):

Smartphone-only breakthrough. In May 2026 Skin Analytics secured regulatory clearance across Europe for its smartphone-only diagnostic to run autonomously, without a clinician in the loop — a step change from its earlier route, which used a low-cost dermoscopic lens clipped to a phone.

Proven at scale on the NHS. The technology has now found more than 25,000 cancers across the NHS, with over 300,000 patients seen and a cancer pick-up rate of roughly 97-98%, with performance data published openly.

Early detection saves lives. Skin cancer is visible on the surface before it spreads, and survival is around 98-99% when caught early — but only 6-8% of urgent NHS skin referrals turn out to be cancer, so screening the healthy majority requires technology rather than scarce dermatologist appointments.

Health-system economics. In the UK's publicly funded system, reducing dermatology visits and waiting-list clearing initiatives — costing about £80m a year in dermatology alone — frees savings that trusts can reinvest in patient care.

Founding story. Neil started the business in January 2012 after cold-calling computer science professors across the UK; the late Professor Bill Fitzgerald at Cambridge backed the idea of using computer vision to diagnose skin cancer.

AI tailwinds. Being early meant learning every deployment mistake first, and the ChatGPT-era surge in belief in AI accelerated hospital adoption of the technology.

Care first, not consumer app. The company deliberately avoids a direct-to-consumer app that leaves patients with a result and no next step — every deployment must arrange access to a biopsy and treatment through the health system.

What is next. After a Series B raised last year, the priorities are proving the technology across European care models and translating it to the US market, with a new partner announcement expected in the coming weeks and months.
