Anthropic in Talks for 1-Gigawatt Data Center Lease With Apollo-Backed Developer
Valida Pau and Amir Efrati: Anthropic is in early talks to lease up to 1 GW of compute capacity from Stream Data Centers (majority-owned by Apollo Global Management; Principal Asset Management also a stake), filling sites with Broadcom/Google-designed TPUs—and possibly Nvidia GPUs—per people with knowledge. Google may provide a credit guarantee (scope unclear); Anthropic has sought Google backstops before. A GW of capacity would require ≥~$40B capital investment per developers. Deal still months from completion and could fall apart; exact capacity and structure unsettled; Anthropic would need lease guarantees plus chip financing. Context: Anthropic mostly rents from AWS/Google/SpaceX; already leases smaller former-miner sites (Hut 8, TeraWulf). Also leases chips directly (AMD 2 GW deal earlier this year; $35B TPU lease SPV with Apollo/Blackstone). Broadcom wants >20 GW financed with those firms (~$700B chip purchases suggested). OpenAI comps: Ohio 10 GW first-phase lease with Nvidia credit support up to $105B. Anthropic has entered ~$531B of compute deals in last 11 months, largely with cloud providers. Hiring dozens for power/facility roles (incl. Canada, Australia). Caveats: early talks; person-familiar; deal may fail; Google guarantee and Nvidia-vs-TPU mix unsettled.
