Will anybody use AI as much as coders do?
AI coding tools have spread particularly rapidly because software engineering produces abundant digital training material and has built-in tests for checking generated code. Four-fifths of programmers report using such tools, and leading coding startups have seen ARR surge, while legal, finance and customer-service applications are growing from smaller bases. The Economist says those markets lack some combination of public data, easy validation, digitised information and users able to experiment freely. Other AI applications should expand, but the coding pattern may not quickly generalise to most office work.
Why it matters
This is the demand-side test of the AI investment boom: coding tools already drive outsized ARR, but the $2.5trn end-decade revenue implied by data-centre spend needs other professions to catch up. Essential for sizing software vs vertical AI markets.
