ThankRoll: A Vision for Independent Creator Support

ThankRoll, a startup co-founded by Cyan Banister and Nadya Lev in 2016, was designed to provide a way for creators to receive recurring financial support through a white-label tipping service. The idea came from their experiences at Zivity, an online platform for artistic photography, where Banister and Lev observed that many artists struggled to monetize their work effectively. In response, they launched ThankRoll to allow creators to receive direct support from their fans via a customizable tipping button that could be embedded on their websites.

Unlike platforms like Patreon, which operate within a larger ecosystem, ThankRoll allowed creators to maintain full control over their own sites while offering a seamless way for their fans to contribute. It integrated with popular website platforms like WordPress, Tumblr, and Squarespace, enabling creators to embed a tipping widget where fans could pledge support, enter their payment information, and cancel at any time. The platform incentivized contributions with perks like exclusive content or personal interactions, strengthening the relationship between creators and their supporters. ThankRoll took a 5% transaction fee, with creators covering credit card processing costs.

The service drew inspiration from crowdfunding platforms like Kickstarter but aimed to create a sustainable, ongoing revenue model for creators. One of its first customers, Laughing Squid, a humor blog, successfully used the service to generate additional revenue through the embedded tipping widget.

Despite its initial promise, ThankRoll is no longer operational. The company ultimately ceased its operations, and its vision of empowering creators through direct, independent monetization ended. However, ThankRoll’s brief existence was part of the broader trend toward finding new ways for content creators to generate income outside of traditional advertising and platform-based revenue models.
