The deal brings 22 Encharter insurance professionals to MountainOne, along with the agency's Amherst office and a satellite location in Lexington. Terms were not disclosed.

Who's who? Encharter has operated in Amherst since 1879, serving individuals, families, and businesses for nearly 150 years under the former name Blair, Cutting & Smith. MountainOne, founded in 1848, is a mutual organization offering banking, investments, and insurance across Massachusetts.

Why now? The acquisition ends roughly 25 years of Plymouth Rock ownership, during which Encharter kept its independent model and relationships with multiple carriers. MountainOne recently earned the Five Star Agency designation from the Massachusetts Association of Insurance Agents, one of just 15 agencies statewide to hold it.

What's the endgame? The deal establishes MountainOne's first insurance office in Hampshire County, extending a western Massachusetts network that already spans Greenfield, Longmeadow, West Springfield, Wilbraham, and the Berkshires. Plans are underway for a new Amherst office.

What changes for customers? Encharter clients keep familiar staff while gaining access to additional carriers and services, including employee benefits, surety bonding, life insurance, long-term care insurance, and Medicare, plus in-house claims assistance. The agency will gradually move to the MountainOne Insurance brand.

"What impressed me most about Encharter was the people and the reputation they've built over generations," said Jonathan Denmark, president and chief operating officer of MountainOne Insurance.

The signal: The deal reflects steady consolidation among independent local insurers, as regional players absorb longstanding community agencies to expand their footprint and service lines. It fits a broader wave of Massachusetts dealmaking — Adams Community Bank and Pittsfield Cooperative Bank recently cleared regulatory approval for their own merger.
