Callaway bets $15M on 3D-printed clubs with new Texas facility

What's the deal? Callaway GolfDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → is investing $15 million in an advanced 3D printing facility in Fort Worth, Texas, to develop and manufacture custom titanium golf club components. The facility, located next to Callaway's North America distribution centre, is expected to open in mid-2027 and begin supporting some US production in 2028.

What's the endgame? Callaway is betting that additive manufacturing will let its engineers build complex designs and structures that conventional methods cannot achieve. The company says this should unlock "meaningful improvements in golf club performance."

Why now? The move builds on roughly seven years of research in additive manufacturing. Since late 2022, Callaway has produced prototypes and custom models internally, developing expertise in titanium 3D printing, and expects to introduce 3D-printed components in some 2027 products.

"We believe 3D printing represents one of the most significant opportunities to advance golf club performance in decades, and we're investing to lead that future," said Chip Brewer, president and chief executive officer.

The Texas spend extends Callaway's US manufacturing push. The company has invested more than $100 million in its golf ball operations in Chicopee, Massachusetts, over recent years.

What could go wrong? The initial production scope is limited, and the performance and commercial benefits remain to be demonstrated. The timing follows a stronger-than-expected third quarter and raised full-year guidance, but club sales fell year over year — so this reads as a long-term product bet rather than an immediate growth driver.

The signal: More than 90% of golf clubs are imported, making Callaway's US-based additive manufacturing play a bid for differentiation through proprietary technology. If it works, the ability to make designs rivals cannot could become a defining edge; if not, it is an expensive experiment in a flat club market.
