Serve Robotics launches first delivery robots outside US on Australia's Gold Coast

What's the deal? Serve Robotics, in partnership with DoorDash, launched Australia's first footpath delivery-robot service on the Gold Coast. The pilot starts in the Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct, with customers ordering from Southport restaurant Gnocchi Gnocchi able to choose robot delivery through DoorDash.

Why the Gold Coast? It is Serve's first market outside the US, where its robots have delivered for thousands of restaurants in cities including Los Angeles, Miami and Chicago. Chief executive officer Ali Kashani said the city has "the walkable neighbourhoods this technology is built for." The precinct has more than 3,000 residents and 20,000 students nearby.

What's new in the setup? For the first time, Serve has partnered with a university to host its operations depot — robots will return to Griffith UniversityDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → at the end of each shift. The partnership will explore internships and early-career roles for Griffith students in robotics and field engineering.

What's the endgame? More local restaurants will join in the coming weeks, with expansion shaped by community feedback and any changes to delivery zones. The robots handle short local trips, complementing rather than replacing human couriers.

What could go wrong? The pilot starts with a single restaurant, so scaling depends on adding partners and operating reliably within local footpath rules. Australian coverage notes such robots face regulatory hurdles, with councils playing a central role.

The signal: The launch tracks Serve's growing US momentum — daily deliveries through DoorDash and Grubhub more than tripled from the second to third quarter of 2026, and the company raised its full-year revenue outlook, though it remained loss-making. The Gold Coast test will show whether that model travels abroad.
