South Yorkshire opens £5K accelerator for Black tech founders
What's the deal? SY Black Tech Expo has opened applications for its Black Tech Founder Accelerator, a programme for up to 10 founders running from December 2026 to March 2027 in South Yorkshire. It is run in partnership with Sheffield Technology Parks and supported by Barclays Eagle Labs. Applications opened November 4 and close November 30, 2026, at 23:59 GMT.
What's on offer? The programme provides accelerator support valued at up to £5,000, covering coaching, infrastructure, and MVP development. Seven sessions at Sheffield Science Park run from early December through a graduation and MVP showcase on March 24, 2027, each lasting around five hours.
Who can apply? Applicants must be 18 or over, have the right to participate in the UK, and be a Black founder, co-founder, or business owner in an active leadership role. The venture must be based or actively operating in Sheffield, Rotherham, Barnsley, or Doncaster, and be developing a technology-enabled product, service, or idea. A finished business or MVP is not required.
What's the endgame? The curriculum moves founders from business architecture and financial management through cloud infrastructure, AI, and customer testing toward a working MVP. The organisers frame it as a way to "turn your vision into a technology-enabled business" and connect founders with a local support ecosystem. Expect around five hours a week on average, including assignments and mentor time.
The signal: The cohort extends targeted support for Black founders beyond the better-publicised national and London-centred offers, such as KPMGDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →'s Black Entrepreneurs' Awards and the Sky and Black Equity Organisation F100 Growth Fund. Its significance will depend on practical details — funding, investor access, and how many founders it ultimately serves. At up to 10 places and £5,000 in support value, it is a small but local addition to a UK landscape where backing for Black founders remains modest in scale.
