Riverside buys reusable-packaging rental firm Hoover CS from First Reserve

What's the deal? The Riverside CompanyDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has acquired Hoover Circular Solutions (Hoover CS) from First ReserveDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → for an undisclosed sum. The Houston-based firm rents reusable packaging and provides fleet management and logistics to refining, chemical, energy and industrial customers.

What does Hoover do? Founded in 1911, Hoover CS operates one of the industry's largest mixed rental fleets across North America, Europe and the Middle East. Its Catalyst Packaging unit handles closed-loop logistics for refinery catalyst, while its Chemical Packaging arm supplies intermediate bulk containers and intermodal ISO tanks for specialty and hazardous chemicals. It serves roughly 850 customers.

What's the rationale? Riverside says it will back Hoover's next phase of growth. "Its reusable packaging and logistics solutions serve critical needs for refining and chemical customers," said Managing Partner Sean Ozbolt, adding the firm will "strengthen its operations and accelerate its growth."

Why now? This is another bet in Riverside's Business Services specialization, where it has invested in more than 400 platform and add-on companies since 1988. CEO Kevin Friar said Riverside will help the team "execute on the growth path" it has set since 2019.

What's the endgame? Partner Craig Kahler said Riverside will "invest in its people, systems and facilities" as Hoover builds on its specialized rental platform and long-standing customer relationships. Houlihan Lokey advised Hoover CS on the deal.

The signal: The acquisition is a private-equity bet on a circular-supply model — renting reusable containers rather than making disposable packaging. Investor appetite for the business was visible shortly before the deal: Riverstone Credit Opportunities disclosed it had exited a 2022 loan to Hoover at a 13% gross IRR and a 1.49x gross multiple. While packaging M&A has been active, most high-profile deals sit in different segments, leaving Hoover's specialized rental niche a less-crowded play.
