New Zealand's Ministry of Awesome opens NEST startup hub in Christchurch
What's the deal? Ministry of AwesomeDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has opened NEST Christchurch, the first site in a planned national Startup Hub Network across New Zealand. The 1,100m² space on Colombo Street offers workstations, meeting rooms, event space, recording studios, and garage space to founders, mentors, investors, academics, and government representatives.
Why now? New Zealand's chief executive Graham Scown argues the country lacks the geographic concentration that drives successful ecosystems elsewhere. "History has shown us that one Rocket LabDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → can give birth to several new unicorns," he said, pointing to MoA alumnus PartlyDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → as proof.
What's the endgame? The network aims to link hubs across the country, with Christchurch as the pilot. The model could be replicated in Wellington and Auckland, as well as smaller regions including Whangārei, Taranaki, Nelson, and Wānaka.
MoA's longer-term target is one high-growth, globally focused startup per 1,000 people — about 5,000 companies.
What could go wrong? The funding gap is stark. The network is designed so that hubs stop "scrapping over" scarce capital, deciding instead who is best placed to bid. MoA says it is avoiding duplicating existing services.
The launch drew senior political backing, including Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, Deputy Prime Minister Nicola Willis, and Minister for Science, Innovation and Technology Penny Simmonds.
The signal: NEST gives physical shape to a 2023 recommendation from MBIE's UpStart Nation report to concentrate support around Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch. New Zealand startups raised US$501.9M in the first half of 2026 — more than all of 2025 — but the total was driven by a few large rounds as deal counts fell. Whether NEST becomes real infrastructure or a branded talking shop will depend on whether it improves early-stage funding access.
