Dutch robot-mower maker Vector Machines draws fresh equity backing to scale solar-farm rollout

What's the deal? Vector Machines, a Heerenveen-based maker of electric, autonomous robotic mowers, has raised an early VC round from regional fund NOM and Eindhoven high-tech investor LumauxDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →. Both are taking equity stakes; the amount was not disclosed.

What's the endgame? The company builds autonomous mowers for terrain where obstacles and poor GPS reception make the job hard, including solar farms. Using GPS-RTK and LIDAR, its machines hold course even when the GPS signal drops out entirely.

Why now? Co-founded in 2022 by Jan-Dirk van der Tol and Sander Steegstra, Vector Machines says its mowers already run at solar farms in several countries. "Demand is enormous," Van der Tol said. The money will fund hiring and software work, while RabobankDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → separately finances production growth planned over the next two years, initially in Europe.

The backstory: NOM first backed the company in 2024 with a subordinated loan, when it had just finished a working prototype. "We see that the company is at a tipping point," said Daniëlle van Dalfsen, investment manager at NOM. "The technology is in place, and market demand has been demonstrated."

Why Lumaux? NOM preferred to invest alongside a market partner, and found one in Lumaux, which focuses on Dutch high-tech startups and scaleups. "They bring not only capital but also technical expertise," Van der Tol said. Van Dalfsen framed the deal as combining public and private capital.

The signal: The financing marks a shift from prototype to commercial deployment in the niche market of solar-farm maintenance, where reliable operation around panels and in weak-GPS conditions is the key challenge. With recent coverage showing no comparable sector deal, this reads as a targeted bet rather than a sign of a broader funding wave.
