Corporate Central backs two student credit unions with $100,000 each

What's the deal? Corporate Central has pledged $200,000 to two student-led credit union initiatives — $100,000 each to the Seattle University Credit Union Initiative and the George Washington University Credit Union InitiativeDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →. The Milwaukee-based credit union announced the grants at Momentum 2026, its annual conference for credit union professionals.

What's the endgame? The proposed credit unions would be staffed entirely by volunteer student employees, filling every role from teller to chief executive officer. Students would gain hands-on experience in governance, financial services, and member service while running an institution that serves their peers.

Why now? The grants build on relationships already in place. Seattle University's initiative became an Associate Member of Corporate Central in November 2025, and George Washington's followed in February 2026.

The category exists because Corporate Central amended its membership bylaws to admit groups still in formation, giving them access to deposit and investment solutions before they secure a charter.

What's the hurdle? Launching a credit union takes planning, startup capital, and regulatory approval — and organizers need capital and infrastructure before a charter arrives. "Raising the startup capital needed to establish a new credit union is one of the most significant barriers these initiatives face," said Cisco Malpartida Smith, board chair for both initiatives.

Chris Felton, president and chief executive officer of Corporate Central, framed the move as a point of difference. "We are a credit union, and credit unions do more than talk the talk. We walk the walk," he said. "Investing in these two wonderful initiatives was a no-brainer."

The signal: The $200,000 matters less for its size than for the timing — it targets the earliest, hardest stage of building a credit union. It arrives as the National Credit Union AdministrationDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → rolls out a streamlined charter-application system, with full automation expected in 2027. The grants are an enabling move, not proof the credit unions are chartered; the milestones to watch are regulatory approval and whether each can build enough capital and membership to launch.
