Portugal's Crest Capital buys forestry group Bioflorestal with founding family
What's the deal? Crest Capital PartnersDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, through its Crest Agro I – FCR fund, has acquired 100% of Portuguese forestry company Bioflorestal alongside the founding Frias family. The deal value was undisclosed. GBS FinanceDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → advised Crest Capital Partners as financial adviser.
What does Bioflorestal do? The company trades timber and produces wood chips and forest biomass, with over 25 years of history through the Transfialense group before becoming independent in 2008. It manages 10,800 hectares, holds more than 156,000 hectares certified under FSC and PEFC standards, and runs a fleet of over 100 machines across Portugal and Spain.
Why it matters: The deal pairs Crest's financial backing with the Frias family's operational experience, aiming to strengthen Bioflorestal's position in the forestry and bioenergy markets. Crest Capital Partners is a Lisbon-based private equity manager that invests in agrifood through its Crest Agro I fund, focusing on farming and forestry assets and sustainable bioeconomy projects.
Why now? Portugal's competition authority cleared the joint-control acquisition on 5 August, finding no significant competition concerns. Bioflorestal's reported share of the national forestry market was under 5%, making this a targeted addition rather than a major consolidation.
The signal: The deal reflects growing investor interest in Portuguese forestry assets. In March, DS SmithDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → sold 870 hectares of certified woodland in Portugal, largely to natural-capital investor Antarr — a sign that forest and bioeconomy plays are drawing capital.
