AB Restaurants lands $8.18M EBRD-backed loan to expand in Kazakhstan

What's the deal? AB Restaurants (ABR), one of Kazakhstan's largest restaurant operators, has secured a KZT 3.7 billion (about $8.18 million) loan arranged by Bank CenterCreditDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →. The European Bank for Reconstruction and DevelopmentDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → will assume half the credit risk under a risk-sharing arrangement with the Kazakh lender.

What's the endgame? ABR will use the debt to renovate and reconcept five existing restaurants and open up to five new outlets in Almaty and Astana. The financing is also intended to strengthen the company's balance sheet.

Who's behind it? ABR runs 48 restaurants and serves roughly seven million guests a year. The new loan follows KZT 1.5 billion the company raised through a two-year bond placement completed in January 2026.

Why now? The expansion targets Kazakhstan's two largest cities, where South Korean chains Genesis BBQDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → and Mom's Touch have also pushed in this year. That adds competition for urban diners.

Why it matters? For Bank CenterCredit, the EBRD backstop supports lending to a consumer-facing business while capping its exposure. For the EBRD, the deal channels financing through a local bank into the private sector. It has committed nearly $13.8 billion across 361 projects in Kazakhstan.

The signal: Development-bank risk-sharing is reaching beyond infrastructure and heavy industry into food service. The move is a measured growth step for an established operator rather than a market-transforming bet, but it shows how such structures can underwrite private consumer businesses.
