TEDAI Vienna ends after three editions; team launches 'Unsolved' format for 2027
What's the deal? TEDAI Vienna, which drew about 1,300 AI professionals from more than 50 countries to Vienna's Hofburg this week, will not return in 2027. Curator Alina Nikolaou said the Vienna team and TED's leadership in the US jointly ended their collaboration. TEDx ViennaDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → is currently paused.
Why now? The decision closes an era. The roughly 20-person team around Nikolaou and co-founder Vlad Gozman ran independent TEDx conferences in Vienna for years before the city secured Europe's first TED conference in 2024.
This week's edition was the third and final one, featuring speakers such as Nobel laureate Geoffrey Hinton and OpenClawDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → creator Peter Steinberger.
What's the endgame? The team is not leaving the stage. It is launching a new format called "Unsolved," focused on the open problems of artificial intelligence, backed by former TEDAI Vienna speakers and partners.
The format has three parts: a numbered database of open AI problems — covering areas like alignment, interpretability, and safety — plus details on who is researching them; local projects run with other TEDx organisers; and a flagship conference.
What's next? The first Unsolved conference is set for late September to early October 2027 in Vienna, at a scale similar to TEDAI Vienna. First tickets have already sold.
The signal: Vienna loses its marquee AI gathering just three years after landing Europe's first TED conference, but the organisers are betting that a problem-focused format can fill the gap and keep the city on the continent's AI event map.
