Korea's DSRV targets Ethiopia's digital ID in African expansion push
What's the deal? South Korean blockchain infrastructure firm DSRV has signed a memorandum of understanding with Fayda Verse, an Ethiopian state-owned enterprise, to connect the country's national digital ID to financial and public services. The deal was signed on October 26, 2026, at Fayda Verse's headquarters in Addis Ababa.
What does DSRV do? It builds blockchain infrastructure and digital public infrastructure. Fayda Verse, launched in 2026 under Ethiopia's sovereign wealth fund Ethiopian Investment Holdings, grew out of the Fayda national digital ID program and runs electronic know-your-customer checks, digital wallets, and e-government services.
What's the endgame? A joint working group will define the technical and business work. Plans include upgrading the Fayda Pass digital wallet into a verifiable-credentials wallet, researching the Fayda Chain blockchain layer, and exploring e-vouchers and other digital ID-based public support.
Why now? Ethiopia's Fayda system is already scaling: World Bank reporting put registrations above 39 million by March 2026, with more than 100 institutions connected. DSRV is also in talks with Côte d'Ivoire and Senegal, signalling a wider African push.
What's the proof point? DSRV plans to apply experience from Madagascar, where it built a World Bank-backed blockchain e-voucher system for farmers. That project tested the full chain from identity verification to merchant settlement.
What could go wrong? The MoU is exploratory. The working group has yet to define its work, and financial-service links will expand only in stages, tied to local regulatory developments.
"National digital IDs become more valuable when they are connected to the financial and public services people use," said Rahel Abraham, deputy director and chief operating officer of Fayda Verse.
The signal: The agreement positions DSRV for entry into a fast-growing digital-public-infrastructure market across Africa, though it remains a research pact rather than a funded deployment or commercial win.
