Alphabet taps euro bond market again, days after $500B selloff
What's the deal? AlphabetDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → launched a seven-tranche euro-denominated bond offering on November 2, its second euro sale this year, as the Google parent raises debt to fund its AI infrastructure buildout. The deal spans maturities from two to 19 years, with Barclays, BNP Paribas, and Deutsche Bank arranging it. Pricing was expected later the same day.
The details: The offering includes two-year floating- and fixed-rate notes, plus four-, six-, nine-, 13-, and 19-year tranches. Initial guidance put the two-year fixed-rate tranche at around 60 basis points over mid-swaps and the 19-year tranche at 205 to 210 basis points over. It follows a €9 billion ($10 billion) six-tranche euro sale in May.
Why now? The timing is delicate. Alphabet launched the sale less than a week after third-quarter earnings sent its shares to their biggest one-day drop on record, wiping about $500 billion off its market value and pushing spreads wider across the tech sector.
What's the endgame? The money supports Alphabet's AI expansion. Despite the market reaction, the company held its 2026 capital spending forecast at $195 billion to $205 billion, covering data centers and other infrastructure, with outlays expected to rise in 2027.
What could go wrong? Investor appetite for long-dated Big Tech debt is being tested as AI credit concerns intensify. On Friday, credit default swaps protecting against an Alphabet default jumped 6.4 basis points to nearly 91 basis points — an all-time high and the largest daily rise on record.
The signal: Alphabet joins a wider hyperscaler borrowing surge — Microsoft recently raised $25 billion in an oversubscribed dollar bond sale. Together, Alphabet, Meta, Microsoft, Amazon, and Oracle have committed more than $3 trillion in coming years, and the final pricing of this deal will gauge how much AI-related debt investors are willing to stomach.
