Meta's ad revenue is now within $300M of Google Search

What happened? Meta's advertising business is now almost as big as Google Search. In the third quarter of 2026, Meta's Family of Apps booked $63.06 billion of ad revenue, up 26% year over year. Alphabet's Google Search & other line brought in $63.35 billion, up 12%. That leaves a gap of about $290 million, according to the two companies' earnings releases.

How fast has the gap closed? A chart from App Economy Insights tracking both lines since 2021 shows Google Search at $31.9 billion and Meta at $25.4 billion in the first quarter of 2021, a gap of about $6.5 billion. Meta has grown faster in most quarters since; in Q3 its ad impressions rose 10%. YouTube ads, reported separately, brought in $11.2 billion in the quarter.

The catch: Neither company was rewarded for its ad growth. Meta shares fell almost 7% after its results, as AI spending turned free cash flow negative and the company raised its 2026 capex outlook to $135-145 billion. Alphabet fell more than 10% after revenue and earnings missed forecasts and it reported negative free cash flow of $9.07 billion.

The signal: If Meta keeps growing ads at roughly twice the pace of Search, its ad revenue could overtake Google's core search line within a quarter or two, at a time when AI answers are changing how search traffic and search ads work. Google still leads on total advertising once YouTube and its ad network are included.
