Apella buys $332M Maryland RIA in 20th deal with WPCG backer

What's the deal? Apella WealthDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, a West Hartford, Connecticut-based registered investment advisor, has acquired Kilner Capital Advisors, a Gaithersburg, Maryland firm overseeing about $332 million in assets. Financial terms were not disclosed. The transaction took effect October 23, 2026.

Who's involved? Founder Joseph "Joe" Kilner started the firm in 2006 to offer investment management, tax and estate planning. He joins Apella as a partner and senior wealth advisor, bringing two team members and his client relationships.

Why now? The deal is Apella's 31st practice addition since its 2014 founding and its 20th since Wealth Partners Capital Group (WPCG)Dealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → took a minority stake in September 2021. It follows a brisk 2026 run that included a $261 million New York–Massachusetts firm and two September deals adding a combined $928 million.

What's the endgame? Kilner adds about 2.7% to Apella's more than $12.5 billion in assets, but the bigger prize is a stronger Maryland foothold. "Joe has built his practice around truly knowing his clients and what matters most to them," said chief executive officer Jim Scanlan.

Context: In a separate deal announced the same day, Sequoia Financial GroupDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, an Akron, Ohio-based RIA with more than $36 billion in assets, acquired Quish, a Boulder, Colorado family office with more than $175 million in client assets. Founder Mariah Quish joins Sequoia's Sentinel Family Office team, extending the firm's Colorado presence after two earlier 2026 acquisitions in the state.

The signal: RIA dealmaking remains active and increasingly scale-driven; DeVoe counted 244 announced deals through September 2026, slightly ahead of last year's pace. The Kilner deal matters less for its size than as another step in Apella's repeatable, WPCG-backed roll-up strategy.
