Global Brain backs stroke-rehab startup Lifescapes in follow-on BCI deal

What's the deal? Global BrainDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has made a follow-on, early-stage investment in Lifescapes, a Tokyo startup building brain-computer interface (BCI) devices for stroke rehabilitation. The deal, announced in October 2026, was made through the Canon Marketing Japan MIRAI FundDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →.

What does Lifescapes do? Founded in 2018 as a Keio University spinout, it develops wearable scalp sensors that detect a patient's neural activity and drive a motorized orthosis on paralyzed fingers in real time. The aim is to rebuild neural circuits in stroke patients with severe upper-limb paralysis who gain little from conventional rehabilitation.

It sells two product lines: a medical-grade device for hospitals and clinics, approved in Japan in 2024, and a functional-training device for long-term care and self-pay facilities.

Why now? The investment follows a US$4.62M raise in June 2026 earmarked for overseas expansion and clinical trials. Lifescapes already has an early foothold in Malaysia, and a trial establishing safety and efficacy could be key to wider clinical use and insurance coverage.

What's the backer's logic? Global Brain cited the founding team's research track record in BCI and neuroscience, the company's approach to functional recovery through neuroplasticity, and the "significant social value" of addressing severe paralysis. The firm first invested in Lifescapes in June 2022, and will support the company alongside Canon Marketing JapanDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →.

The signal: The deal is continued backing for a specific rehabilitation application, not a broad bet on BCI, where headline capital stays concentrated in a few large deals. Stroke is a leading cause of long-term care in Japan, giving a clinically validated, approved device a clear path to scale.
