RedBird and Sound Ventures pledge $1B for tech, media and culture bets

What's the deal? RedBird Capital PartnersDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → and Guy Oseary's Sound Ventures have teamed up to invest up to $1 billion in "emerging platforms at the convergence of technology, media and culture," the firms announced on October 29. Gerry Cardinale's New York-based RedBird will contribute the expertise of RedBird X, its AI investment and incubation platform.

Who's involved? RedBird holds investments in more than 50 companies worth over $82 billion in enterprise value, including Artists EquityDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → and the Fenway Sports Group. Sound Ventures, led by Oseary and Effie Epstein, is a Los Angeles firm with more than $2 billion in assets and early stakes in Anthropic and OpenAI.

Why now? The partnership follows RedBird's $2 billion investment in David Ellison's Skydance for its takeover of Paramount Global, which closed in August 2025, plus a further $4 billion tied to Paramount's Warner Bros. Discovery merger. It also recently took control of media startup Puck in a deal valuing it at $250 million.

What's the endgame? The pact pairs Sound's founder network with RedBird's media-business experience and AI platform. "This partnership puts the power of RedBird's institutional investment platform and strategic network firmly behind this next generation of business builders," Cardinale said.

Oseary said RedBird "brings a different kind of outlook that complements what we have built at Sound, with the resources and scale to compound the impact of our investments."

The signal: The $1 billion pool is sizeable but far smaller than recent megafunds like Thrive Capital's $10 billion vehicle and Sequoia's $7 billion late-stage AI fund. Global VC fundraising reached $157.9 billion through Q3 2026, with capital concentrated in AI. For now, the firms have disclosed no timetable or deal pipeline — making this a capital commitment and partnership, not yet evidence of a new trend.
