Kakao Games, Krafton back AIZ Entertainment with $14.9M for AI chatbot messenger

What's the deal? AIZ Entertainment, led by former Kakao chief executive officer Namkoong Whon, raised US$16.8M in an early VC round from Kakao Games and Krafton. Each investor contributed US$8.38M. The startup is building a platform that fuses AI chatbots, games, and messaging.

What's the endgame? AIZ wants a messenger where people and AI together form a social graph. Users chat with AI chatbots, play games through dialogue and choices, and connect with others via avatars built around shared interests — making conversation itself the content.

What's the money for? AIZ will refine its chatbot game messenger, launch the service, and grow its user base. It plans to debut in Japan first, then roll out in South Korea. The company also aims to pursue business partnerships with Kakao Games and Krafton at home and abroad.

Why now? The round follows a US$13.4M seed raised in 2024, bringing total funding to US$30.2M. It lands as money floods South Korea's AI character-chat market, even as broader game-startup investment cools.

Krafton chief executive officer Kim Chang-han said he hopes AIZ's blend of games and conversation "leads to a new user experience in the AI era" (translated from Korean). Namkoong said the round proves "the business potential of the service we are preparing."

What could go wrong? AIZ has yet to launch. The value of the deal — and any real collaboration with its backers — hinges on whether the service ships and attracts users.

The signal: The round ranks in the 93rd percentile among all early VC media deals in South Korea, a sign of conviction in character-chat platforms. With Scatter Lab's Zeta recently pulling in a US$41.9M Series D, Kakao Games and Krafton's joint bet reads as a strategic push into a fast-growing adjacent market.
