LIGHTWORKS buys assessment specialist management base to link hiring and training
What's the deal? Japan's LIGHTWORKS has acquired management base co., ltd.Dealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, completing the share purchase on October 16 and making it a group company. The deal value and stake were not disclosed. LIGHTWORKS, founded in 2001, runs the corporate learning platform CAREERSHIP; management base, founded in 2006, provides recruitment aptitude tests, organisational diagnostics, and HR consulting.
Why now? LIGHTWORKS announced a capital and business tie-up with management base in September before closing the stock acquisition a month later. It frames the move as a response to a shrinking workforce and AI-driven changes to how work gets done, factors that raise the stakes on retaining and developing staff.
What's the endgame? LIGHTWORKS wants to cover the full arc from hiring to development in one system. As a first step, it will start offering two of management base's services through its own channels: the recruitment aptitude test "RiskChecker," already used by about 600 companies and built on data from roughly 50,000 test-takers, and a harassment-prevention training course for managers.
The company is combining management base's assessment expertise in making people and organisations "visible" with its CAREERSHIP training know-how. RiskChecker flags traits hard to spot in interviews across compliance, performance, and workplace adaptation. The manager training uses pre-assessment data to help managers recognise their own harassment risk — management base research found only 23% of those accused were aware their conduct counted as harassment.
The signal: This looks less like a large takeover than a complementary deal to absorb specialist capability. LIGHTWORKS says CAREERSHIP leads domestic market share for corporate learning management systems in its fiscal 2025 forecast, with more than 6.39 million user IDs. The real test is whether it can sell management base's tools into that base and link strong training infrastructure to upfront aptitude screening.
