JetZero wins $5.3M FAA grant to test top-mounted engines

What's the deal? JetZero has been selected to receive $5.3 million from the Federal Aviation AdministrationDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → under Phase IV of its Continuous Lower Energy, Emissions and Noise (CLEEN) program. The grant funds engine and nacelle instrumentation to collect airflow data for top-mounted engines in an all-wing configuration.

What's the endgame? JetZero, a Long Beach-based aerospace startup, is developing its Z4 blended-wing aircraft, which it says will deliver up to 50% better fuel efficiency than comparable tube-and-wing planes using the same propulsion technology. The company targets entry into service in the early 2030s.

What's the money for? Under the award, JetZero will capture airflow data at the engine inlet and fan exit across takeoff, climb, cruise, and crosswind ground operations in a real operational environment, rather than on costly engine rigs or simulated ground tests. Mounting engines on top of the fuselage also reduces noise for airport communities.

Why now? The FAA launched CLEEN IV in September 2026, awarding two-year, cost-shared agreements to Boeing, GE AerospaceDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, Honeywell, hybrid-electric developer Heart Aerospace, and JetZero. CLEEN is the agency's principal public-private partnership for maturing technologies that cut fuel burn, emissions, and community noise.

By the numbers: The grant ranks around the 95th percentile among US grant rounds in engineering and manufacturing equipment, based on a sample of 507 deals. Yet it is modest next to JetZero's larger backing, including a $100 million senior secured term loan closed in August 2026, led by Pinegrove Partners and Silicon Valley Bank.

The signal: The award adds federal validation to JetZero's push toward a demonstrator flight and eventual certification. It is technical support, not aircraft-development capital — the harder tasks of proving and certifying a radical design remain ahead.
