Carbon One lands €13.3M EU grant for green methanol demo plant

What's the deal? Berlin-based Carbon One (C1 Green Chemicals) has secured a €13.3 million ($14.8 million) grant from the EU Innovation FundDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → to scale up its green methanol technology at Leuna Chemical Park in Germany.

What's the endgame? C1 will use the funding to build and operate METHANOL.ONE, a 20 t/d demonstration plant converting biomethane into green methanol for use as a low-carbon fuel. Production is scheduled to begin in 2029.

Why now? The demonstration plant builds on C1's existing Leuna100 pilot operations, at a site with more than a century of methanol production history. The company develops an ultra-efficient catalysis process aimed at producing high-purity green methanol at competitive prices, targeting the shipping and chemical industries.

What could go wrong? Conventional large-scale methanol relies on a century-old, high-emission process that is cheap when using gas and coal. C1's challenge is proving its decentralised, non-fossil approach can match that economics at scale.

The signal: The grant ranks among the largest for chemicals companies in Germany, in the 95th percentile of such deals all-time. It reflects growing institutional backing for green methanol as a decarbonisation tool — recently underscored by LEGO GroupDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → starting to use renewable methanol in its production.
