Carnegie Robotics buys its iconic Pittsburgh "Blue Building
What's the deal? Carnegie RoboticsDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has purchased its longtime headquarters at 4501 Hatfield Street in Pittsburgh's Lawrenceville neighbourhood from the Regional Industrial Development Corporation (RIDC). The 50,000-square-foot "Blue Building" and its four-acre site have housed the company since 2014. The price was not disclosed.
Why now? Carnegie Robotics exercised a pre-existing option to buy the property as it prepares to expand. The purchase is the first sale from RIDC's Lawrenceville Technology Center, converting a decade-long landlord-tenant relationship into permanent ownership.
What's the endgame? Founded in 2010, Carnegie Robotics has grown into a national leader in commercial and defence autonomy — notably without venture capital, private equity, or outside investors. Owning its base secures a long-term foothold in the region.
The site carries industrial history. Once part of the Heppenstall Steel Company, it was acquired by RIDC in 2002 and redeveloped after extensive environmental remediation, earning national recognition in 2017 as a leading adaptive reuse project.
"This milestone simply would not have happened without RIDC," said John Bares, chief executive officer of Carnegie Robotics. "They took a chance on Carnegie Robotics, gave us the flexibility to grow, and have been extraordinary partners and friends ever since."
"Carnegie Robotics is one of our region's great success stories," said Donald F. Smith, Jr., president of RIDC. "Our partnership demonstrates what can happen when an innovative company finds the right environment and the right support to succeed."
The signal: The purchase fits a broader Pittsburgh robotics build-out. Agility Robotics has announced a new 50,000-square-foot facility in the city, while local firms including Gecko Robotics are adding manufacturing capacity. The deal signals confidence in a cluster that Lawrenceville has branded "Robotics Row."
