Thailand's BDMS buys control of gene therapy firm for $5.08M

What's the deal? Bangkok Dusit Medical Services (BDMSDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →) is taking majority control of Genepeutic Bio by subscribing to US$5.57M (roughly $5.08 million) of newly issued shares. The deal, struck through wholly owned subsidiary Royal Bangkok Healthcare on October 16, 2026, lifts BDMS's stake from 19.9% to 55%, making Genepeutic a subsidiary.

What does Genepeutic do? It researches, develops, and manufactures Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (ATMPs), including cell and gene therapies. It is already associated with a locally developed CAR-T treatment in Phase II trials.

What's the endgame? BDMS said the investment aligns with its direction to strengthen capabilities in precision medicine and cell and gene therapies. Control of Genepeutic gives Thailand's largest private hospital operator a direct link between its network and homegrown advanced treatments.

Why now? Thailand is formalising oversight of advanced therapies, with recent Thai Food and Drug Administration measures building a pathway for ATMP manufacturing and registration. The timing lets BDMS move as domestic developers advance clinical programmes and the regulatory framework takes shape.

What could go wrong? Commercial value remains uncertain. ATMPs demand costly manufacturing and strong clinical evidence, and regulatory approval and patient access will take time.

The signal: The modest price belies the strategic shift: a hospital operator moving upstream into drug development rather than simply holding a passive stake. It points to Thailand positioning itself as a regional base for cell and gene therapies, with care providers and local innovators increasingly intertwined.
