What does Smart Technologies do? It develops AI-based tools for duty-free retailers, including SmartDetax, which improves operational efficiency, and JPrefund, which handles consumption tax refunds. Its services are used by more than 2,500 retailers.
Why now? Japan revises its duty-free system in November 2026, shifting to a refund model under which travelers pay tax-inclusive prices and reclaim consumption tax after customs approval on departure. Smart Technologies has already built a compatible system, and some retailers have begun using it.
The timing tracks a booming market. Japan drew a record 42.7 million foreign visitors in 2025, who spent an all-time high of around US$73.1B.
What's the endgame? The deal builds on a business alliance ITOCHU struck with Smart Technologies in January 2026. Backers say they will use their sales networks and payment and finance expertise to strengthen the company's platform, and tap traveler purchase data for new ventures in data marketing and sales promotion.
The signal: The investment is a bet on operational infrastructure rather than a headline-grabbing round. As Japan rebuilds its tax-free shopping plumbing for a record inbound wave, backers are positioning around the systems that make the new rules work.
