Ottawa backs Quebec coach maker Prevost with $13.2M to blunt US tariffs
What's the deal? The Government of CanadaDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → is giving US$13.6M to Prevost, a division of Volvo Group Canada, to help develop a new vehicle platform and reduce the impact of US tariffs. The grant, routed through the Strategic Response Fund, supports a broader US$64.2M project called the One Prevost Platform.
What's the endgame? The platform aims to support multiple propulsion types, including low- and zero-emission options. The money will fund a new public-sector commuter motorcoach and the electrification of Prevost's X-series, while anchoring manufacturing in Sainte-Claire, Quebec.
Why now? More than 80% of Prevost's sales are in the US, where its coaches face a 10% tariff, according to La Presse. The grant aligns with Canada's auto strategy, announced by Prime Minister Mark Carney in February 2026, which earmarks US$2.2B from the Strategic Response Fund to help manufacturers adapt to tariffs, modernise, and diversify.
The investment follows a US$9.53M financing package from the Quebec governmentDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, bringing announced public support for Prevost's projects to more than US$22M.
What they're saying: The grant is "a strong vote of confidence in our capacity to innovate and strengthen the future of Canada's vehicle manufacturing sector," said Prevost and Volvo Group Canada president François Tremblay. Industry minister Mélanie Joly said the investment will "help secure long-term manufacturing in Quebec" and position Canada "as a global leader in zero-emission vehicles."
The signal: The package is both industrial policy and a defensive bet — keeping production and jobs in Quebec while a tariff-exposed exporter pivots toward cleaner products. With Ottawa and Quebec stacking grants on a single mid-sized manufacturer, Canada is signalling how far it will go to shield its auto sector from US trade pressure.
