CopperPoint buys surety firm from Boston Omaha for $84.3M

What's the deal? CopperPoint Insurance CompaniesDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has completed its all-cash acquisition of General Indemnity Group (GIG) from Boston Omaha Corporation for about $84.3 million. The deal, agreed in May and cleared by regulators, closed on October 23, 2026.

Who's involved? CopperPoint is an Arizona-based specialty provider of workers' compensation and commercial property and casualty insurance, with $5.27 billion in total assets. GIG, founded in 2015, runs a nationwide surety platform spanning all 50 states and Washington, DC.

What changes? The acquisition folds in GIG's subsidiaries: United Casualty & Surety, placement platform BOSS Bonds, and the SuretyBonds.Market technology platform. GIG's Boston office remains the headquarters for surety operations and becomes a hub in CopperPoint's national footprint.

What's the endgame? The deal adds nationwide commercial and contract surety underwriting to CopperPoint's commercial-lines business. The fit is closest to its construction business, while the digital platforms broaden distribution.

"GIG brings experienced surety professionals, nationwide capabilities, and a best-in-class platform that makes placing bonds easier than ever," said Kellen Booher, CopperPoint's chief executive officer.

Why now for Boston Omaha? For the seller, listed on the NYSE, the sale converts its surety unit into cash. Boston Omaha will hold the proceeds for future opportunities, including a recently announced $30 million share repurchase plan.

The two sides also set up a $5,250,000 escrow to secure the sellers' representations and warranties, with CopperPoint's post-closing indemnification claims capped at that amount.

The signal: This is a targeted expansion rather than a broad insurer merger. Its significance lies in widening CopperPoint's geographic and product reach; the test now is whether it can integrate the operation and grow it.
